Elk Grove Village, IL. 7/21/14  Anyone who works in the manufacturing industry can attest that it is a fast paced environment. An unorganized manufacturing plant can result in a facility that is difficult to work in, can increase lead time, and cloud communication among employees. Being organized is an essential part of keeping up with your demand and the process of getting there can be overwhelming. We have narrowed down a few pieces of advice to help you along the way. Director of Operations at Custom Plastics, Inc., Jeff Nichol, advises "Keep only the necessary items in the work area, dispose or keep in a distant storage area less frequently used items, and always discard unneeded items."

If you are a multi-building facility, such as Custom Plastics, reduce the effort needed to ship products by storing, packing, and shipping finished products directly from the building they were manufactured in. By doing this, your shipping department can get products out to customers quickly without wasting time searching internally for the finished items. Jeff also adds, "Here at Custom, work in progress materials are stored in the department or points of use. This reduces the time to manufacture end products."

Another way we stay organized here is the installation of HandiWALL®, which we manufacture at our plant and distribute through our HandiSOLUTIONS® product line. This industry leading slatwall is made of cellular foam PVC, has a variety of accessories, and can hold over 100 lbs per hook. Not only does HandiWALL® outshine regular slatwall and pegboard in its ability to hold a vast amount of weight, but it comes in a variety of colors to match any company’s brand and style. HandiWALL® allows you to take clutter off of desks and floors and systematically arrange supplies in an easily accessible and reliable spot. To learn more about HandiWALL® and how it improves the organization of your facility, visit our HandiSOLUTIONS® website or view our trifold brochure on HandiWALL® in manufacturing facilities.

Finally, the best thing you can do is to maintain your organization system. Once you've cleaned house, continue these practices to ensure your facility is clean, safe, and an efficient place to work.
